Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost?

wordspace is free. With no limit: notes, Inbox and wiki, every model profile, voice notes on the Mac, iCloud and the channel with the iPhone, export to Markdown and for Obsidian, Themes. Two things have a cap that resets on the first of every month: 10 imports of files or links and 1 new theme. Written notes, voice notes and whatever arrives from the iPhone don't count; a file that can't be read uses up nothing.

Is there a paid version?

Not yet. A full version without the two caps is on its way, paid once (€29) and yours for good: no subscription. Today there are no purchases in the app.

Do I need an account or an internet connection?

No account. Internet is only needed to download an intelligence model, to import a link and, if you use the iPhone, for the channel through iCloud Drive. Writing and on-device intelligence work offline too.

Where does my writing go?

To your Mac. If you use the iPhone app, notes travel between the two in your iCloud Drive, in a space of the app that doesn't appear in the Files app; if you turn on iCloud note sync in the settings, they are also kept in step between your Macs. Either way it is your iCloud account: nothing reaches us. Details are in the privacy policy.

How do notes move between iPhone and Mac?

By themselves, through iCloud Drive: nothing to copy by hand. You need the same iCloud account on both devices and iCloud Drive turned on. Notes captured on the iPhone arrive in the Mac's Inbox; the Mac's notes and wiki reach the iPhone a few seconds after every change.

Why can't I edit a Mac item on the iPhone?

There is a single Inbox: on the iPhone you also see the Mac's (active, archive, trash) and on the Mac you see the iPhone's archive and trash. But everything is edited where it was born: the iPhone's notes on the iPhone, the Mac's on the Mac; and an iPhone note the Mac has already picked up is edited on the Mac. So two devices never write to the same thing, and there are no conflicts.

Does the iPhone app work on its own?

It captures notes, typed or dictated, and lets you read and search the notes and wiki that came from the Mac. The wiki, though, is built on the Mac: the iPhone app is made to work together with the Mac app.

How do I import a file?

From the Inbox “+” or the note's toolbar, “Import” offers three ways. In the Inbox: the file waits with a summary, like a quick note. External source in a note: the text stays in the source card, to consult, and only what you write below it enters the wiki. Internal source in a note: the text becomes part of the note and the file stays linked; when you edit it in its own app, the note updates at launch, when you come back to wordspace or when you open it, and the card counts the changes it has read. Internal sources work with Markdown, plain text, Word, RTF and OpenDocument. A PDF goes into the Inbox or in as an external source if its text can be selected: scans can't be read.

What are Themes?

An area that reads the document folders you choose under “Options” — Word, OpenDocument, RTF, Markdown, plain text, with the file types and the period — and groups them by theme. The folders are remembered after a restart, and the analysis updates itself once per launch: “Status” tells you how far along it is. Each theme can be viewed as text or as a cloud, chosen under “View”. With “New theme…” you create one starting from one or more words found in the documents. Themes don't change your files and don't write notes on their own: from a theme's page, “Import…” brings a document into the Inbox or into a note.

The wiki and corrections aren't available — why?

These features need an intelligence model. Turn one on in Settings → Intelligence: use Apple Intelligence (where your Mac offers it) or download a local model. Without a model, writing still works.

Requirements

wordspace is a macOS app, with an iPhone app that works together with the Mac one. On-device intelligence features require a Mac with Apple silicon; Apple Intelligence requires a compatible Mac with the feature enabled in System Settings. The channel between iPhone and Mac needs iCloud Drive turned on and the same iCloud account on both devices.
